Frequently Asked Questions

You can make a claim for Criminal Injuries Compensation (“CIC”) if you have been the victim of an offence which was committed on or after 22 January 1971 and you have suffered injury or loss as a result.

If you have not made a claim, please ignore this advice.

You will need to provide:

  • a victim impact statement addressing how the offence has affected your life
  • a statement of events
  • tax documents for 3 years prior to and 3 years following the date of the offence
  • a police report number
  • all medical reports relating to injuries sustained as a result of the offence 
  • details of the status of any charges made against an offender
  • details of any workers’ compensation benefits received - you can claim both.
The maximum award available for criminal injuries compensation is $75,000.
You can be compensated for:
  • pain and suffering
  • loss of enjoyment of life
  • loss of income
  • medical expenses, including the cost of obtaining medical reports
  • other incidental expenses (such as travel for medical treatment and loss/damage of personal belongings).
You have 3 years from the date of the offence to make a CIC claim. However, you may apply to file an application after 3 years.
It doesn't matter how old you are. However if you under 18 a parent or guardian must be named as your representative in your application. If you are over 18, then you use your name on the application.
